The Netherlands has one of the busiest railway network in the world. The railways are becoming more and more important. The number of passengers increase as well as the amount of cargo by train. Intersections between rails and between rails and roads are more and more made on different levels, to improve road safety and to limit delay. Through the country more fly-overs are built and stations areas are radically renewed.
Soil-ID is remarkably often involved with these constructions, like in the city Helmond. Major changes are made in the station area, on both sides of the railway. As part of a bigger plan, a new traffic lane is made and a new building for bicycle storage is built. In a later stage the entire station will be renewed, but for now an underpass for all different sorts of traffic needs to be built. Soilid is involved to realize the water-repellent layer for the construction pit. In total 6800 m² has to be injected, divided over several project. First the construction pit for the new building for the bicycle storage is injected and after that the area for the viaduct.
This complicated building process requires a tight planning. There are several complicating factors. For instance, the injection needs to be placed at different depths and the injection tubes can are placed one-by-one instead of per two (an upside is that lighter material can be used). Also concrete piles are place in a part of the building site. An extra amount of water glass needs to be injected around these piles. Another complicating factor presents itself in a later stage: a non-injectable layer. This layer wasn’t detected with the soil investigation, which is done by taking random samples. This particular layer is about 150 m². The delay can mostly be prevented by adjusting the depth and injecting on a deeper level.
The project summary in numbers:
- 500 injection tubes;
- Variable depths;
- 290 litre of mixture per hose;
- Over 3 million litres of injection mixture in total;
- 6800 m² injected (the total of the different areas);
- A combined capacity of 38 pumps (in the heydays).
During the suspension of rail traffic 2 injection containers were used (the 22-pumps container and the 16 pumps container), to meet the production goals in the limited time. During the suspension of rail traffic the planning in written out in hours instead of days. This requires the utmost of preparation, capacity, and expertise. Nut the job is done successfully and within the set timeframe.
